Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the recognized hazard of being struck by fragments of plastic pipe due to the pipes potential of explosive shattering when used to transport compressed air:    a)  On or about March 16, 2015, in the Service Shop  Building,  the employer used a Schedule 80 PVC pipe to transport compressed air at an operation pressure of 135 psi.       Among other methods, the following are feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard:     1.    Replace the current PVC compressed air piping system with material suitable for h maximum air pressure as recommended by the Plastic Pipe Institute, such as ABS or metal.  2.    Follow  ANSI B31.9-2014, Section 923.3.2, which states: "Materials such as PVC, CPVC, and PVDF, which exhibit brittle failure as defined in ASTM F412, shall not be used for compressed air or gas service."
