29 CFR 1910.28(b)(8)(i): Repair pits, service pits, and assembly pits less than 10 feet in depth. The employer limits access within 6 feet (1.8 m) of the edge of the pit to authorized employees trained in accordance with � 1910.30. On or about December, 2016, mechanics were allowed to work closer than 6-feet from the edge of the repair and service pit without any fall protection systems such as but not limited to guardrails and warning lines. This condition exposed employees to fall hazards greater than 4-feet.
