Standard Violated:  29 CFR 1926.652(a)(1):  Each employee in an excavation was not protected from cave-ins by an adequate protective system designed in accordance with paragraph (b) or (c) of this section:      (a)  On or about January 27, 2017, employees were exposed to cave-in hazards while working in a 7 foot deep trench with no protective systems.  The soil was evaluated to be Type C.  Small rutted benches were in the area where the employees were exposed.  The walls to the top of the trench where the workers were observed were not smooth and mostly vertical.  The spoil pile stood on the edge of the trench and rose approximately 3 feet above grade.  The soil was previously disturbed.    Abatement Note:  Abatement certification and documentation are required for this item (see enclosed "Certification of Corrective Action Worksheet").
