29 CFR 1926.651(k)(1): Daily inspections of excavations, the adjacent areas, and protective systems were not made by a competent person for evidence of a situation that could have resulted in possible cave-ins, indications of failure of protective systems: At the sewer line installation and trenching site, 58 E Hwy 8, Steelville, MO, on 9-20-17, where the benching requirements were not in accordance with the standard, a competent person was not knowledgeable on the specifics of the standard or the site, including soil classification and the specific soil classification at this site, sloping requirements relative to the soil classification, bench depths required by the appendix of the standard, and that the depth of the trench where an employee was working was over 5 ft. Abatement documentation is required for this violation.

The bottom part of the excavation, from the bottom of the trench to the first bench, was 5 ft. 8" where the 8" water line was laid in a trench with vertical sides and a width of approximately 33" (2' bucket).
