29 CFR 1910.28(b)(1)(i): The employer did not ensure that each employee on a walking-working surface with an unprotected side or edge that was 4 feet (1.2 m) or more above a lower level was protected from falling by one or more of the following: Guardrail systems, safety net systems, or personal fall arrest systems: Aviation mechanics are exposed to fall hazards during aircraft maintenance within the maintenance hangar at 5260 Banshee Road, Hazelwood, Missiouri. Mechanics are not protected from fall hazards while performing duties such as, but not limited to: a) Aviation mechanics are exposed to an approximate 10 foot, 5 inch fall hazard during an engine changeout when they work, unprotected from a fall, on the pylon to disconnect and reconnect the engine to the engine pylon mounts or to remove upper engine cowlings. b) Aviation mechanics are exposed to a an approximate 5-6 foot fall hazard when removing and replacing landing gear actuators during landing gear maintenance and during wing repair without fall protection systems.
