29 CFR 1910.1030(d)(2)(i): Engineering and work practice controls were not used to eliminate or minimize employees exposure:  (a)  On or about June 12, 2018, and at times prior, employees were exposed to needlestick injuries because the employer did not provide tools, engineering controls, or work practices to prevent contact with potentially contaminated sharps during tasks where used needles could reasonably be anticipated, namely during housekeeping in resident rooms and while laundering resident clothing and linens.  When employees see needles on the floor, they report that they pick them up with their gloved hands and throw them in the trash.    Abatement Note:  Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazardous condition include, but are not limited to:  providing brooms and dustpans along with an enforced work practice to sweep up fallen needles, and to sweep trash and debris in which potential hazards cannot be seen; providing sharps containers that are closable, puncture resistant, leakproof on sides and bottom, and labeled or color-coded, to residents who use needles, housekeepers, and in the laundry room.
