29 CFR  1926.652(e)(2)(i):Excavation of material to a level no greater than 2 feet (.61 m) below the bottom of the members of a support system shall be permitted, but only if the system is designed to resist the forces calculated for the full depth of the trench, and there are no indications while the trench is open of a possible loss of soil from behind or below the bottom of the support system.  On or about October 28, 2021, during the replacement of a sanitary sewer line at a worksite located at 33707 Vine Street, East Lake, Ohio, the employer did not ensure the excavation of material was no greater than 2 feet below the bottom of a trench box type cave-in support system.  The bottom of the excavated material was approximately 7.5 feet below the bottom of the trench box.
