General-duty citation text
29 CFR 1910.151(c): Where employees were exposed to injurious corrosive materials, suitable facilities for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes and body were not provided within the work area for immediate emergency use: (a) On or before February 28, 2023, the employer did not provide suitable facilities for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes in the maintenance shop where employees use corrosive chemicals such as but not limited to Stinger Black Scorpion Degreaser. This condition exposed employees to the risk of severe irritation, chemical burns, and even blindness. A feasible means of abatement includes but is not limited to: 1) a portable eye wash device, appropriate for the expected hazardous exposure, and containing not less than one gallon of potable water; or 2) a plumbed emergency eyewash unit capable of delivering not less than 1.5 liters (0.4 gallons) of clean water per minute, with flow valves that are simple to operate, go "on" in one second or less, and remain "on" during the eyewash procedure and can be operated handsfree. For details on emergency eyewash and shower equipment, OSHA references the American National Standard for Emergency Eyewash and Shower Equipment, ANSI Z358.1.
