A stairway, ladder, ramp or other safe means of egress shall be located in trench excavations that are 4 feet (1.22 m) or more in depth so as to require no more than 25 feet (7.62 m) of lateral travel for employees. a) Crosby Square townhomes located at 84 founders Drive Dawsonville, GA 30534, Excavation: On or about 04/25/2023, the employer exposed an employee to engulfment hazards while repairing a sewer pipe, in that a ladder or other safe means of egress from the excavation was not provided to employee working in an excavation measuring 11-feet, 5-inches deep by 11-feet, 9-inches wide by 16-feet long.

29 CFR 1926.651(j)(2):Employees shall be protected from excavated or other materials or equipment that could pose a hazard by falling or rolling into excavations. Protection shall be provided by placing and keeping such materials or equipment at least 2 feet (.61 m) from the edge of excavations, or by the use of retaining devices that are sufficient to prevent materials or equipment from falling or rolling into excavations, or by a combination of both if necessary. a) Crosby Square townhomes located at 84 founders drive Dawsonville, GA 30534, Excavation: On or about 04/25/2023, the employer exposed employees to cave-in/engulfment hazards while repairing a sanitary sewer pipe, in that the spoil piles were not kept back from the excavated edge at least 2-feet before allowing employee to work inside the excavation which was not provided with a cave-in protection system.
