An employee was troubleshooting a vacuum pump connected to a drum containing cream filling. The employee shut off the vacuum pump, disassembled the pump, turned the pump back on, and was trying to remove thick cream around the edge when the pump suction cycled. The employee's left thumb was caught between the base ring and the inside of the pump ferrule housing, and was amputated at the first knuckle from the tip.
