Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:
P.L. 91-596 Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health
Act of 1970:  The employer did not furnish employment and a place
of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees were exposed to cumulative trauma
stressors resulting in employees receiving cumulative trauma
disorders (CTD):
(a)  Throughout the processing plant - The plant did not have an
ergonomics program which effectively managed the cululative trauma
stressors and cumulative trauma disorders of the employees.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method
to correct his hazard is:
1.   Effectively implement the existing written ergonomics
program.
2.   Have an ergonomically competent person assist the company
in implementing the ergonomics program.
3.   Use the "Ergonomomics Program Management Guidelines for
Meatpacking Plants" developed by OSHA to assist in the
effective implementation of the program.
4.   Effectively train the employees and management concerning
the ergonomics program.

(a)  Kill floor - Shavers, split saw operators, leaf lard pullers,
gland pullers, on or about 3/10/93.
(b)  Head table - Tongue removers, snout markers, head chiselers
and cheek meat removers, on or about 3/10/93.
(c)  Cut floor - Loin pullers and rib pullers, on or about 3/10/93.
Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to
correct these hazards are:
1.   Rotate employees from high stressor jobs to low stressor jobs.
2.   Utilize power-assisted tools to perform the jobs.
3.   Train employees in developing ergonomically sound methods to
perform their jobs.
4.   Subdivide jobs to lower ergonomic stressors.
5.   Utilize ergonomically sound hand tools.
6.   Lower the line speed.
7.   Alter job stations to properly posture employee's
hands/wrists.
