Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: the hazard of being struck on head or other body parts by the air ducts which hang over the heads of the board/pair operators. a) In the Boarding Area, the air ducts connected to the air conditioning system were not positioned to prevent operators from striking their head on the sharp metal edges of the louvers, exposing the operators to severe head injuries. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to: 1) Relocate the air ducts so that the louvers and air system are not located directly over the heads of the operators and/or, 2) Tape all the sharp edges of the louvers with rubber and perform frequent and regular inspections of the air ducts to ensure that they are secure.
