Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) Employees working at the plastic forming machine were exposed to a hazardous condition that was caused by using schedule 40 PVC pipe for the distribution of compressed air. This condition is created when compressed air pressure is increased beyond the tensile strength of the plastic pipe, a rupture can occur. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to replace the schedule 40 PVC pipe with an impact resistant Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) pipe. This pipe is recommended by the Plastic Pipe Institute for this purpose.
