Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a. As of October 22, 1991, health care workers such as nurses, nurse aids, and laundry workers were exposed to the hazard of being infected by HBV through possible direct contact with blood or other body fluids due to exposure from administrating vitamin, flu, insulin, antibiotic, medication, pain, and mantoux shots; cuts while shaving residents, feces and urine containing blood,potential needlesticks, administering first aid to residents with skin tears and cuts, handling contaminated linens, and administering intravenous (IV) medications. A feasible and useful abatement method for reducing this hazard is: 1. All such employees and any other exposed employees shall be offered hepatitis B vaccinations free of charge in amounts and at times prescribed by standard medical practices.
