General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to flammable liquids or gases that were stored or in use at the immediate area: (a)At the barge area - Fire extinguishers were not inspected or maintained and documented at least monthly. Royal Pacific Fisheries, Inc. provides petroleum services to the local commercial fishermen. The employer is required to have adequate fire extinguishers in number and suitable for the hazard. These extinguishers shall be located in the immediate area where containers containing flammable liquids or gases are stored or in use. Such extinguishers shall be ready for use at all times. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be to maintain and inspect the fire extinguishers at least monthly and document the inspections.
