Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:
The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which
were free from
recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious
physical harm to
employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck
and/or crushed by a
descending automotive lift:
a)  Service Bay Area - Automotive lifts, including but not limited to
Gilbarco lifts used
by technicians 132, 327, and lift between technician 332 and 135, were
either not
equipped with automatic safety locking devices or had inoperable safety
locking devices.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this
hazard is to install or repair automatic mechanical devices (safety
locking devices) to hold
the lifts in the fully extended position as recommended in American
National Standard
