Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employee(s) in that: Employees were exposed to a potential explosion hazard due to improper storage of the incompatible chemicals of an organic peroxide and acetone. These products were observed on or about 1/25/95 being stored adjacent to each other in the Table Top Room and Wicker Room. Employees were exposed to the risk of chemical burns and/or smoke inhalation in that; separate storage areas or a substitution of chemicals had not been established. Among other methods, two feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this are: (a) Providing separate storage areas for the organo peroxides and acetone; or, (b) Substituting the acetone with a more compatible solvent such as ethyl acetate or methyl ethyl ketone. Consideration of these substitutes must take into account their lower permissible exposure limits as opposed to acetone's.
