Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Infection with Chlamydia Psittaci (a) On or about 09/09/93: while working in close contact with infected birds during feeding and cage cleaning throughout the store. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS.... (a) To establish a psittacosis training and prevention program for all employees which shall address as minimum: (1) An explanation of the modes of transmission and prevention of psittacosis. (2) A description of the epidemiology of psittacosis and signs/ symptoms associated with the disease. (3) Instructions to immediately report to the employer the development of any adverse signs and symptoms consistent with psittacosis in the employer. (4) Instructions on how to recognize psittacosis in affected avian species. (5) Instructions to immediately report to the employer any indications that a bird may be infected. (6) Proper technicques and protective equipment to be utilized in handling psittacine birds. (7) Medical monitoring program for all complement fixation (cf) tests for the diagnosis of psittacosis. * The use of half-face air purifying respiratory equipped with high efficiency particulate air cartridges at a minimum will be acceptable.
