Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970.  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that
employees were exposed to the hazards associated with the hazard of
serious crushing
injuries:
(a)In the shop area - An employee with the job title of salesperson
who uses a Globe Automotive Lift to lift an automobile for
demonstrational purposes, was not protected from the
automobile from inadvertently lowering; on or about 2/6/95.
ABATEMENT NOTES:
Among others, several feasible and acceptable methods to reduce this
hazard are to:
1.Install a locking device on the automotive lift with an automatic
mechanical device to hold the lift in the fully extended position,
instruct the employees in the safe use and operation of the
automotive lift, and perform a periodic inspection of the
automotive lift.
2.Install four manual jacks when the automotive lift is fully
extended and instruct the employees in the safe use and
operation of the automotive lift and jacks.
3.Reference ANSI B153.1-1990 Safety Requirements for the
Construction, Care, and Use for Automotive Lifts.
A search of the OSHA standards has been conducted and there
are no applicable standards.
