Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of exposed rotating cutter blades on a wood shaper machine: PRODUCTION SHOP: ON OR ABOUT MARCH 14, 2001, A WOODWORKER RECEIVED A SERIOUS AMPUTATION INJURY OF HIS RIGHT HAND AS HE WAS USING A CASEDEI WOOD SHAPER WITH 6-INCH HIGH CUTTER BLADES. WOOD WAS BEING FED FROM THE LEFT SIDE OF THE MACHINE, I.E., IN THE SAME DIRECTION THAT THE BLADES WERE SPINNING. ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD WOULD BE TO USE A MOLDING MACHINE WHERE THE WOOD IS AUTOMATICALLY FED INTO THE CUTTER HEAD IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION THAT THE SPINNING BLADES ARE ROTATING.
