Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employees a place of employment which was free from recognized
hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in
that employees were
exposed to a fall hazard as the employer did not ensure that the ropes
used for the boatswain
chair descent system were appropriately inspected prior to each usage:
a) Showboat Casino, window washing operation, Atlantic City, N.J -
Employee was injured
when the rope used to support the boatswain chair he was using broke
resulting in a nine story
fall. Observed on 05/07/97.
Among other methods, one feasible abatement method to correct this hazard
is that the employer
comply with the safety provisions outlined in ANSI A10.8-1988, para. 6.16,
sec. 6.162 which
requires daily inspections of the entire system.
