Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of being struck by or struck against during material handling operations involving the unloading of steel slabs: a) 2950 S. Columbus Blvd. - Employees involved in the performance of material handling operations, which include the utilization of below the hook lifting devices and the positioning and moving of trailers, have preformed their duties in a careless manner, resulting in employees being injured from loads being prematurely released from lifting magnets. ABATEMENT NOTE: One feasible means of abatement would be to ensure employees utilize safe material handling procedures. The safe material handling procedures would include ensuring that the ground spotter is directing the operators of the yard jockeys when it is safe to move; ensuring that the operators of the yard jockeys are following the direction of the ground spotter(s); ensuring that there is good contact between the lifting magnet and the steel slabs, and ensuring that the ground spotter is a safe distance away from the area where the steel slabs are being hoisted.
