Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The

recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to being splashed with concentrated hot acid should the heavy
walled glass
containers fail from the stress of exposure to direct heat:
Location: Precious metals recovery room
On or about: 01/08/02
a) Four, 17 liter, Pyrex heavy walled glass jars containing a mixture of
Nitric and Hydrochloric
acids (Aqua-regia) were exposed to direct heat contrary to the
manufactures instructions.
AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT
METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO:
a) Follow the manufactures instructions not to heat heavy walled glass
containers
over direct heat
by using a Vycor or other type immersion heater.
b) Have containers fabricated of fused quartz or other material capable of
withstanding direct
heat applications.
Note: The employer is required to submit abatement certification for this
item in
accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19.ce
