Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a tripping hazard: a)In the new product plant, adjacent to the raw material saw machine and roller conveyor, on or about 02/11/02: Employees are stepping across an elevated roller conveyor in order to make adjustments to a sawing machine. Employees cross the conveyor using two sets of job made stairs. The conveyor is approximately three feet high and 15 inches wide. Among other methods, two feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard are to: 1.Suitable means such as tread plates can be used between the rollers as a walking surface for designated operators in the performance of their duties in accordance with American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) B20.1-1993, paragraph 6.1(b). 2.Relocate the controls and/or equipment which are behind the conveyor to a location where employees can have access without having to cross the conveyor.
