Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to severe burns and other injuries from potential explosion hazards that can result from moisture in charge materials: a) Jobsite, Anode Platform - Employees utilize overhead cranes and fork trucks to load drums of recyclable metal materials (copper) into furnaces and kilns. The drums can contain liquids (oils and water), which cause explosions when dumped into the molten metals in the furnaces and kilns. Observed on or about 04/17/03. Feasible and acceptable methods to eliminate the hazard include providing dry storage for charge materials for an adequate period of time and carefully inspecting bales and containers for any residual moisture. A more reliable method used by foundries today is to use a remote charging system with charging material dryers or pre-heaters. NOTE: ABATEMENT DOCUMENTATION REQUIREDATION
