Labor and Employment Article, Section 5-104(a): The employer did not
furnish employment
and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that
were causing or
likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees:
(a)Date of Violation:04/03/03
Location:Hatch Access Stairwell
Condition:Employee ascending a folding ladder, while carrying a compressed
gas
cylinder in one hand, did not maintain a firm hold on the ladder with
both hands, and had not adjusted the base of the ladder so that it was at
an angle that was safe to climb.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard
is to ensure all employees receive ladder training, and provide a safe
method, such as a sling
or basket, to hoist compressed gas cylinders and materials to an elevated
work area.
Abatement documentation (photographs, receipts, copies of programs,
training
certification, etc.) is required for this item.
