Section 6(a) of the Puerto Rico Occupational Safety and Health Act: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or physical harm to employees in
that employees were
exposed to:

El
patrono no
proveyo empleo y un sitio de empleo libre de riesgos reconocidos que estan
causando o que
puedan causar muerte o dano f1sico a los empleados, por cuanto empleados
estaban expuestos
a:
At the buildings 4 and 5 of the 292 penal Institutuion - The nurses were
using the
esphingomanometer to take the blood pressure of the patients an it was
dripping mercury
by its joints, the mercury dropped in the floor of the buildings 4 and 5.
Hazard:  Exposure and contamination with mercury vapors.
Among others methods, one feasible and acceptable method is to established
a program
to visually verify the esphignomanometers before and after each use and
make sure they
are in good conditions, and teach the safe handeling of the mercury to the
employees.
En los edificios 4 y 5 de la Institucion penal 292 - Las enfermeras
estaban
utilizando el
esfignomanometro para tomar la presion de los pacientes y el mismo estaba
goteando
mercurio por una de las uniones, el mercurio cayo al piso de los edificios
4 y 5.
Riesgo:  Contaminarse y exponerse a los vapores de mercurio.
Entre otros metodos, un metodo factible y aceptable es establecer un
programa para
verificar visualmente los esfignomanometros antes y despues de cada uso
para asegurarse
de que estos esten en buenas condiciones y adiestrar a los empleados en el
manejo seguro
del mercurio a los empleados.
