Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:
Jobsite located at 5005 Grover, Omaha, NE 68106- The employer did not
furnish employment
and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that
were causing or likely
to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees
were exposed to hazards
of being struck or crushed by a defective automotive lift.
The two lifts in the garage area were prone to fall without warning and
were prone to jerk up
while being raised without warning. The lifts would not lower once they
were raised unless
someone got on the lift and helped lower the lift with additional weight.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this
hazard is to follow the
recommendations of ANSI/ALI ALCTV-1998 Standard for Automotive
lifts-Safety requirements;
ALI SMO1-1 Lifting It Right A Safety Manual from the Automotive Lifts
Institute; ANSI/ALI-
ALIS-2001 Standard for Automotive Lift Safety Requirements for
Installation
and service.
Abatement certification and abatement documentation is required for this
violation. The
documentation should include a written verification of abatement,
applicable measurements or
monitoring results, and photographs or videos which you believe will be
helpful. Abatement
certification sheet is enclosed with the citation.
