Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to thermal burns:
a)The employer did not ensure that steam pipes in the dry clean area and
washer area were
covered to prevent employees from making contact with the bare pipes.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct the
hazards is to insulate
each pipe to prevent employee contact.
NOTE:Employees are also exposed to steam water from the Ajax sleever in
that the heated water
is splashing out of the front of the machine onto employees.
In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(c), abatement certification is required
for this violation
(using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET).
