Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to the potential hazard of being "struck by" plastic
projectiles from a rupture
polyvinyl chloride (PVC) compressed air line:
a)  On or about 05/03/06, throughout the facility routed along walls and
ceilings, PVC
pipe was used to convey compressed air to power hand tool and other
devices. The PVC pipe
was not an approved compressed air line nor was it enclosed in conduit or
casing.
Among other methods one feasible method to abate the hazard is to use the
following acceptable
materials for the compressed air distribution system:  Type L copper,
Schedule 40 steel,
schedule 40 galvanized, schedule 40 black iron or thermoplastic piping
specifically designed for
compressed air such as ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene)
