Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being crushed while handling and moving granite slabs: (a) Location - Yard and shop: On or about 9/26/06, an employee sustained crushing injuries while attempting to handle and move granite slabs without specific training for the task. Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable means to correct this hazard is to instruct employees so they know how to safely handle and move granite slabs. Develop clear, written work rules so workers know where to position themselves in conjunction with material handling equipment during transitions. Devlop clear work rules so the number of workers needed for the task(s) is clearly understood. Post reminders near the work stations. Ensure management involvement and oversight.
