Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were likely to cause death or serious harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards: ANSI Z245.2 1997 (Stationary Compactor Safety Requirements) requires that any loading chamber access door shall have an interlock system that prevents cycling motion while the access door is open. a) Philadelphia Financial Center - On August 24, 2007 and on August 27, 2007, two employees were directed to enter into the "charge box" of the Marathon Trash Compactor in the attempt to retrieve missing social security checks which were thought to have been inadvertently thrown away. The machine was not equipped with an interlock device which would have prevented the machine from cycling while the access door was opened. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD WOULD BE TO EQUIP THE ACCESS DOOR ON THE MARATHON TRASH COMPACTOR WITH AN INTERLOCK SYSTEM. NOTE: ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED
