Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees: a)In that employees were exposed to the possibility of injury from falling crane load(s) from the W. M. Smith Electric Co. 3 Ton underhung crane in the Shipping and Receiving area because the wire rope had severe kinking resulting in distortion of the rope structure and had in excess of 12 broken wires in one lay and in excess of four broken wires in one strand per lay as described in paragraph 11-2.4.2 b.1 and 3 of ANSI B30.11 - 1970. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazardous condition is to replace the wire rope on the crane. Abatement certification is required for this item - use the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET for this purpose.
