21 VSA Title 23, Chapter 3, Sub-Chapter 5, Section 223(a): Section 5(a)(1)
of the Occupational Safety and
Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of
employment which was free
from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or
serious physical harm to employees in
that employees were exposed to fall hazards in the workplace. On or about
April 24th, 2009, an employee
working from a 24 foot extension ladder was exposed to fall hazards at the
School Auditorium in the Williston
Central School, located at 195 Central School Dr. Williston, VT. Among
other feasible and acceptable
abatement methods to correct the hazard include, but are not limited to
the employer providing training in
ladder safety to all employees who may use the ladders. The ladder safety
training would enable employees to
recognize hazards related to ladders and the procedures to follow to
minimize hazards when using a ladder
such as the nature of fall hazards from ladders, the correct procedures
for the use of ladders, the placement
and care in the handling of ladders, the maximum intended load carrying
capacities of ladders and an
inspection process for recognizing ladder defects and damages prior to use.
