General-duty citation text
The employer did not comply with Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Heal Act of 1970. On or about March 11, 2009, in the plate storage area, a crane operator uses an American 10-ton crane with two DEMAG hoists, each of the hoists having an OHIO magnet attachment. The bridge, hoist, and magnet attachment operated through the use of a remote controlled box. The employer does not ensure the remote controlled box is marked indicating the mode of operation for each piece of equipment exposing the employee to a hazard. ANSI B30.16 - 1973, Overhead Hoists, Chapter 16-2.1.1.2 Controls: Each control element shall clearly indicate the direction of the resultant motion. ASM B30.20 - 2006, Below-the Hook Lifting Devices, Chapter 20-3.2.1 (b) Controls: The position of the control switch of handle of a lifting magnet shall be marked with "Lift", "Off", and "Drop", or equivalents to indicate the mode of operation of the lifting magnet. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to abate this hazard is to permanently mark the remote box indicating the mode of direction in accordance with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers ANSI/ASME B30.20.3 - 2006, Safety Standard for Cableways, Cranes, Derricks, Hoists, Hooks, Jacks, and Slings. Date by which Violation Must be Abated: 7/14/209 OOOOOOOOV
