Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that
employees were exposed to a struck-by hazard.
a) DonTom Contracting, 29 N.Market St., Shamokin, PA: Insufficient bracing
allowed the trusses to become unstable, exposing workers standing on the
trusses, side
walls, and floor of the building to be exposed to struck-by and crushing
hazards when
the entire structure collapsed, on or about 01/21/09.
Among other feasible and acceptable methods to abate this hazard is for
the contractor to
follow the recommendations of the BCSI-B1, Summary Sheet-Guide for
handling, installing,
restraining, and bracing of trusses, or WTCA (Wood Truss Construction of
America),
temporary bracing recommendations.
