North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of North Carolina: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees conditions of employment and a place of employment free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that employees were exposed to electrical hazards from improper use of temporary wiring, improperly wired electrical outlets, and exposure to live electrical parts : a) Temporary Migrant Labor Camp, 7661 NC Highway 39 South, Zebulon - Eighteen farm workers living in three wood framed housing units were exposed to: 1) In unit #1 the main circuit breaker panel located in a shower room approximately 5 feet from the shower and 1 foot of the water heater was missing the cover exposing live wiring. 2) In all three units temporary wiring was being used in lieu of permanent wiring in the form of extension cords. 3) All three units had electrical wall outlets that were missing outlet covers exposing live electrical wires. 4) In unit #2 electrical wall outlets located in the kitchen and bathroom within 6 feet of a water source was not grounded properly and did not have a functioning GFCI. Among others, one feasible and accepted method of abating this violation is to eliminate all temporary wiring being used on a permanent basis and have all corrections of the exposed wiring conditions made that meet NEC and local building code requirements.
