Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that, employees were exposed to amputation hazards: Employees are exposed to amputation hazards from the unguarded point of operation that is activated by a unprotected foot pedal control which is not protected against falling or moving objects or by accidental stepping onto the pedal for the following machines; 1. Brown Challenge three hole punch 2. Bostitch wire stitcher, model #7 A feasible and useful method to correct this hazard, among other methods: 1. Install a guarding device over the foot pedal control. 2. Replace current foot pedal controls in accordance with ANSI B11.19 standards.
