Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to crushing injuries:
Jobsite, 278 Strayer Lane, Summerhill, PA: On or before 11/21/2011,
employees were setting
80 foot long wooden roof trusses on a pole building, and the trusses were
not adequately braced
at the top cord and bottom cord, and the trusses were erected without the
advice of a registered
professional engineer on bracing and securing the trusses. These
conditions caused the roof
trusses to collapse injuring an employee.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable means of abatement is to
follow the
recommendations of a registered professional engineer, component
manufacturer, along with the
Wood Council of America and Truss Plate Institute guidelines outlined in
Building Safety
Information, BCSI-B1 Summary Sheet-Guide for handling, installing,
restraining and bracing
trusses, dated 2008, and the BCSI-B10 Summary Sheet-Post Frame Truss
Installation, Restraint
and Bracing, dated 2008.
