29 CFR 1910.1030(d)(2)(i):     Engineering and work practice controls were not used to eliminate or minimize employees exposure:    a) Wyalusing Valley Retirement and Personal Care Home:  Employees tested resident's blood glucose levels via lancets (Bayer and McKesson) in various lancing devices and administered resident's insulin injections via insulin syringes (BD) and insulin pens (Humalog and Lantus) with attached pen needles and the employer did not ensure that these devices were engineered with sharps injury protection, on or about 12/4/2012. 29 CFR 1910.1030(d)(4)(iii)(A)(4):     Reusable containers for contaminated sharps were opened, emptied, or cleaned manually or in another manner which exposed employees to the risk of percutaneous injury:    a) Wyalusing Valley Retirement and Personal Care Home:  Portable disposable sharps containers were utilized as reusable sharps containers and employees transferred, by hand, contaminated syringes and lancets from the portable sharps containers to larger disposable sharps containers, on or about 12/4/2012.    NO ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED     NOTE:  A reusable sharps container system for disposable sharps will be acceptable only if it does not expose employees to the risk of percutaneous injury. No system involving the manual opening, emptying, or cleaning of the containers will be allowed. The only acceptable system is a fully automated container cleaning system that eliminates employee exposure to sharps.
