Event description

Employee breaks pelvis in trench cave-in

Investigation abstract

At approximately 4:15 p.m. on August 30, 1988, Employee #1 was smoothing the gra vel in a 10 ft deep trench. From the bottom to the 5 ft deep level the trench wa s 3 ft wide; above that it was approximately 7 ft wide. The trench was open for approximately 30 ft. The walls above and below the benches were almost vertical. The east bank of the trench started to cave in and a coworker yelled for Employ ee #1 to get out of the trench. As Employee #1 tried to run out, he was caught i n full stride and buried. The coworker dug Employee #1 out. Employee #1 was stab ilized at the hospital with a broken pelvis and internal bruising.
