STRUCK IN FOREHEAD BY FLYING PIECE OF LUMBER
Investigation abstract
Employee #1 was feeding lumber through the edger saw. A 1-inch by 4-inch by 4-fo ot tapered piece of slab, cut from the board passing through the edger, flew bac k from inside the edger, over the top of the pressure roll and struck employee # 1 in the forehead. He was knocked to the ground. Another employee heard the saw stop cutting, looked around, saw a slab backing out of the saw and saw employee #1 falling to the ground. The other employee notified the resaw operator, then w ent to get help. A forklift operator who was also an emergency medical technicia n came to the scene, helped carry employee #1 to a camper-type pick up truck and then took him to a hospital, which was seven miles away. Employee #1 died.
