Event description
Four killed, one injured when aviation fuel explodes
Investigation abstract
Employees #1 through #5 were using a vacuum truck on a pier to pump the remainin g JP4 aviation fuel from the cargo tanks of a floating barge. An explosion and f ire occurred during the transfer process. Employee #1 was hospitalized and Emplo yees #2 through #5 were killed. The ignition source was not determined. The flas hpoint of this fuel was 10 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit. The barge dimensions were 3 00 ft by 60 ft, with a 17 ft draft.
