EMPLOYEES BURNED BY MOLTEN SODIUM

Investigation abstract

EMPLOYEES #1, #2 AND #3 WERE CHANGING A SODIUM VALVE ON A SODIUM TANK CAR UNLOAD ING VALVE. THEY WERE SPRAYED WITH MOLTEN SODIUM WHEN THE VALVE WAS REMOVED AND S ODIUM WAS FORCED OUTWARD BY COMPRESSED NITROGEN LOCATED BETWEEN A BLOCK VALVE AN D THE VALVE BEING REPLACED. THE NITROGEN IS NORMALLY USED TO FORCE SODIUM OUT OF THE TANK CAR AND INTO A HOLDING TANK. EMPLOYEES #1 AND #2 WERE KILLED. EMPLOYEE #3 WAS HOSPITALIZED.
