Event description

Employee dies after fall into water

Investigation abstract

On June 22, 1987, Employee #1 and a coworker were assigned to scrape barnacles o ff a ship in dry dock. Employee #1 was assigned to the port side of the vessel a nd the coworker was on the starboard side. The coworker saw Employee #1 scraping and then went to the starboard side and began scraping. After a short period, b etween approximately 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., he saw Employee #1's hard hat floa ting in the water. He called out to Employee #1 with no results, and then went t o summon help. The Sheriff's Department responded and dragged the canal. The bod y of Employee #1 was found the following day at approximately 12:30 p.m. The emp loyee, who had not been wearing a life jacket, had drowned.
