EMPLOYEE FELL FROM MOVING TRUCK BED TO GROUND; STRUCK HEAD

Investigation abstract

A CONSTRUCTION CREW WAS INSTALLING GUARDRAILS ON INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 30. TWO EMPL OYEES WERE PERMITTED TO RIDE IN THE BED OF A TRUCK WHILE THEY WERE STANDING. THE VEHICLE'S PRIMARY USE WAS TO CARRY TOOLS AND MATERIALS. AS THEY WERE LEAVING TH E HIGHWAY AT ABOUT 35 MILES PER HOUR, EMPLOYEE #1 LOST HIS FOOTING AND FELL OUT OF THE TRUCK TO THE GROUND. HE SUFFERED FATAL HEAD INJURIES.
