FINGERS AMPUTATED BY UNGUARDED CIRCULAR RIPSAW BLADE
Investigation abstract
ON AUGUST 9,1985, AT APPROXIMATELY 9 AM, EMPLOYEE #1 WAS PUSHING 3/4 INCH THICK PINEWOOD STOCK THRUGH THE SAW BLADE OF A AMERICAN SAW MILL HANDFED CIRCULAR RIP SAW. THE SAW BLADE WAS UNGUARDED. THE STOCK BECAME CAUGHT ON THE THROAT PLATE BE HIND THE BLADE. EMPLOYEE #1 REACHED BEHIND THE BLADE TO FREE THE STOCK, BUT INST EAD CAUSED IT TO BIND AGAINST THE BLADE AND KICK BACK. EMPLOYEE #1'S LEFT HAND F OLLOWED THE STOCK THROUGH THE BLADE. THE INDEX AND MIDDLE FINGERS WERE AMPUTATED AND THE EMPLOYEE WAS HOSPITALIZED.
