EMPLOYEE INHALED HYDROCHLORIC ACID FUMES

Investigation abstract

THE EMPLOYEES WERE FILLING A 330 GALLON STORAGE TANK LOCATED IN THE CHEMICAL STO RAGE ROOM. THE TANK OVERFLOWED, SPILLING HYDROCHLORIC ACID ONTO THE FLOOR. EMPLO YEE #1 ATTEMPTED TO CLEAN UP THE SPILL, USING ONLY A HALF-FACE RESPIRATOR AND A PAIR OF GLOVES FOR PROTECTION. EMPLOYEE #1 WAS ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL FOR THE TREATMENT OF HYDROGEN CHLORIDE INHALATION. AS A RESULT OF THIS ACCIDENT, THE COM PANY HAS INSTALLED THREE INTERLOCKING AUTOMATED SYSTEMS DESIGNED TO PREVENT CHEM ICAL OVERFLOWS. THE TANK FILLING OPERATION WAS PERFORMED COMPLETELY MANUALLY BEF ORE THE ACCIDENT.
