26 HOSPITALIZED DUE TO INHALATION OF EPOXY ADHESIVE SMOKE

Investigation abstract

AT APPROXIMATELY 8 AM ON DECEMBER 3, 1987, AN EMPLOYEE LEFT A 12 OUNCE CAN OF EP OXY ADHESIVE (ABLEBOND 789-3) ON A TIMED CONVEYOR THAT LED TO A CURING OVEN. THE EMPLOYEE HAD INTENDED TO REMOVE THE CAN BEFORE THE CONVEYOR COULD MOVE. THE CON VEYOR ADVANCED, CARRYING THE CAN INTO THE OVEN. THE ADHESIVE POLYMERIZED IN AN E XOTHERMIC REACTION AND RELEASED WHITE SMOKE INTO THE ATMOSPHERE. TWO EMPLOYEES R EMOVED THE CAN TO THE OUTDOORS AND SUPRESSED THE SMOKE BY SUBMERGING THE CAN IN WATER. 26 PERSONS WERE ADMITTED TO THE HOSPITAL. MOST WERE RELEASED THE FOLLOWIN G DAY. SYMPTOMS INCLUDED TIGHTNESS OF THE CHEST AND COUGHING. SOME HAD DELAYED S YMPTOMS OF NAUSEA, VOMITING AND SKIN RASH.
