Event description

EMPLOYEE CAUGHT BY STRONG TIDE; DROWNED

Investigation abstract

Two employees were working from a suspended scaffold, patching the concrete on p ier #80. They had completed the job and were getting the equipment ready to move when a rubber concrete bucket fell into the water. Employee #1 removed his life jacket, wallet and hard hat and dove into the water to retrieve the bucket. The current from the outgoing tide carried him out to another pier. He tried to hol d on at the pier but could not. He drowned. The other employee tried to throw em ployee #1 a rope, but it was too short to reach. There was no life-saving skiff in the area.
